French Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot told the Associated Press last week that the vaccination campaign would be “voluntary,” but she urged all French residents to receive the shot when the vaccine becomes ready in mid-October. 94 million doses of the vaccine, more than enough to cover France’s population of 61.5 million, were purchased at a cost of €1 billion euros and the first batches have already been received

Alex Spillius London Telegraph Monday, August 31, 2009 Anti-war protesters are planning an autumn campaign against President Barack Obama’s extension of operations in Afghanistan to coincide with the eighth anniversary of the first bombing of the Taliban. There is rising disillusion among liberals and peace activists that a president who built his campaign on his opposition to the war in Iraq now views America’s other conflict as a “war of necessity”. Mr Obama has already added 21,000 extra troops to the 38,000 stationed there by George W Bush.
